TRUE OR FALSE?

If you’ve read the Spring edition of Stoke News you may have seen the “TRUE OR FALSE?” questions about Stoke History. These were:

 

  1. The residents of Athelney used to live in mud huts.

  2. At one time there were over 40 farms in Stoke where the milk was collected daily.

  3. There used to be through trains from Athelney Station to London.

  4. There were nearly 50 members of Stoke Home Guard in WW2.

  5. The clock on the church cost £145.

  6. One of the church windows was commissioned by King Alfred the Great.

  7. A wife was once sold in a Stoke pub.

  1. TRUE. Two Victorian travellers reported on these hastily constructed homes on the river bank. See HERE

  2. TRUE. There were 44 locations in the village at which milk was collected daily.

  3. FALSE. Although the station was on the main London to Penzance line from 1906 onwards, there is no record of a through train.
