Sedgemoor OAPs (The Levellers)

Sedgemoor Old Age Pensioners Club was formed in January 1971, affiliated to the Chestnut Tree Senior Citizens Club in Taunton. In 2000 it still owned a minibus, which took members on fortnightly shopping trips to Taunton and various social occasions. Below are a few of the activities in the year 2000.

One of the speakers was a Mr Keith Rowley, who brought along his Newfoundland dog, Chloe. She was a working dog trained to rescue people from the sea, but was happy to work with him on stage.

Various social occasions were held, including an anniversary party at the Pigeons (the pub in Curload), with 49 members attending. Some members went to the Middlezoy production of the show 'At The End of the Pier', with some 80 year olds rolling home after 11.30 pm!

In August a garden party was held at the house of John and Paddy Scott when, after a lovely sunny morning, the afternoon found members sheltering from the rain under a variety of golfing umbrellas, as seen above. However, the rain went away and members enjoyed a lovely tea, to the accompaniment of old time songs played on the accordion by Mr Leggett.

The Harvest Festival Service and sale took place in September, with auctioneer Ken Court.

Five summer coach outings took place and members were fortunate in having fine weather for them all. The destinations were Cheddar and Weston-Super-Mare (is that WSM below?), West Bay and Weymouth, Ilfracombe, a choice of Torquay, Paignton or Brixham, and a mystery trip to Dawlish Warren for a cream tea via Tiverton, Bickleigh and Teignmouth.
